It’s never too early to teach children the right habits, especially on how to be more environment-friendly.
There are a variety of organisations and initiatives in Luxembourg providing fun ways to inform children of environmental issues and to help them better understand their contribution toward saving the planet.
Here are 3 initiatives to help your children become mini eco-heroes.
1) Bee aware
Besides producing the honey that so many children enjoy, bees are also crucial for the well-being of the ecosystem, thanks to their role as pollinators.
The City of Luxembourg has therefore organised a pedagogical trail of about 2.5km for children to learn more about the impact of nature’s busy workers and other insects on the environment. The trail is divided into 14 stops, all spread between Place Guillaume II and the National Museum of Natural History in the Grund.
The information is available in English, French and German, and will be open to public until September 2019. It’s a great opportunity for the entire family to learn while enjoying a nice stroll through Luxembourg City.
2) Zero waste workshop
Zero waste refers to the idea of waste reduction, e.g., by avoiding single-use packaging. Some ways to achieve this is by recycling, upcycling, or DIY (Do It Yourself) workshops, which are a fun and playful way to teach your children zero-waste principles.
Organised by two women (Carine Dieudonné and Hélène Volon), the company Zero-Waste in Luxembourg offers workshops on how to live a life that creates a minimum amount of waste, for adults and children alike. The workshops are available in French and English, can be organised at clients’ homes or schools, and can be attended by a maximum of 12 children (with adult supervision for kids under the age of 7).
Workshops can be theoretical or practical (DIY), depending on the children’s ages and interests. The topics range from creating a sketchbook and making glue, to paint and play dough, toothpaste, soap, upcycled sponges, and even vermicomposters.
3) SuperDrecksKëscht
SuperDrecksKëscht (SDK) has been around for a long time and is very popular in the grand duchy. SDK, a combination of activities and campaigns concerning national waste management, is easily recognisible by its logo and green “SuperSpillMobil” (Super-play-mobile) truck. One of SDK’s main goals is to teach younger generations the importance of waste prevention and sustainable consumption by organising indoor and outdoor activities at schools, nurseries and other institutions, or by offering handbooks to teachers.
Among the fun activities they offer is SDK theatre, through which children act in a play called “D’Geschicht vum Offallmonster” (“the story of the waste monster”), on the topic of the consequences that could occur “if everybody were to handle the natural environment as thoughtlessly as the ‘waste monster’”.
It’s also possible to book group visits to the organisation’s logistics centre for hazardous products in Colmar-Berg. This is an interesting way for children to witness what happens to the items they place in the recycling bin.
